Frequently Asked Questions

When do you send out creative prompts?

We send prompts to our Substack subscribers every 3 months (January, April, July, October). Each prompt is themed and you can submit your work by going to www.fieldfarepress.com/submissions. We publish successful submissions by guest authors on our Substack and promote them on our Instagram account; these may also be considered for publication in our next print issue.

When is your next print issue publishing?

Issue 5 of Fieldfare is scheduled to publish in October 2025.

Where can I get a copy?

You can buy a back issue of Fieldfare from our online shop or visit one of the stockists listed on our website.

What sort of things does the magazine include?

At Fieldfare, our mission is to explore the importance of place: the qualities that make a place special or unique, and that foster a sense of authentic human attachment and connection. We are particularly interested in the narratives of women and other groups that are traditionally under-represented in print media.

We are looking for stories where the idea of place is interlaced with historical meaning, grounded in tradition and heritage, bolstered by personal connection, and explored with a fresh and interesting perspective. We are interested in beautiful and striking images that can convey the essence of a place to our readers.

Each issue is a mixture of photo essays, travel features, personal narratives, interviews, profiles of artists and gardeners, and beautiful houses and buildings—all with a focus on the importance of place and connection.

Do you pay for submissions published on Substack or in print?

We regret that we are not currently able to offer payment for submissions that are featured on our Substack and/or in print. Our aim with Fieldfare is to promote and encourage new and emerging writers and photographers to the best of our ability on our various platforms and to help them reach a new audience. In time, we hope to be able to also offer payment for accepted submissions. We hope you hope you will consider submitting your work if you feel able to do so within those constraints.

Do you publish short stories or plays?

We do not publish fiction or plays at this time.

Do you publish poetry?

Each print issue of Fieldfare includes one poetry contribution, typically one or more poems by a single author.

What is the word limit?

We are looking for written submissions of no more than 1500 words.

If my submission is selected to be published on Substack, will it also be published in print?

We are constrained by space in the print publication, and so not all submissions that are published on Substack will be published in print as well. We will notify those whose submissions have been selected for the print journal in September 2025.

What are you looking for in a photo essay?

We are interested in beautiful and striking images that can convey the essence of a place to our readers.

Please have a look at our Instagram account, our Substack, or a previous print issue so you understand the Fieldfare aesthetic before submitting images. Please send a small curated selection of images (maximum 10) via our submissions page and explain in the space provided how they relate to the theme of the issue. Please do not send a link to a whole portfolio, Instagram account or Substack.

How does your Substack work?

There are two versions of Fieldfare on Substack. The basic version is free. If you subscribe to this free version, you will receive occasional free posts, letters from the editors, and our quarterly creative prompts. You will also be able to read essays submitted to Fieldfare via our quarterly writing prompts. We will select the best of these articles to be published in the forthcoming print version of Fieldfare.

The second version is paid. If you subscribe to this paid version, you gain:

  • A FREE COPY of the forthcoming Issue 5 of Fieldfare (publishing October 2025), worth £15, for people who sign up as paid subscribers by 31 March 2025

  • discounts on our back issues

  • access to everything we post on Substack. We post for paid subscribers at least once a week

  • access to the subscriber Notes and Chat functions on Substack, so we can chat to our paid subscribers in real time

  • full access to the archive.

All this for less than the price of a cup of coffee per month in central London—BARGAIN!
